“Even the Winter” by Audrey Assad

It would be so easy to quit

When times get tough or your day is fine, but you’re just plain tired…

It’s so much easier to just lay down and FORGET.

Forget to sing yet neglect to notice how beautiful the silence can be…

But it’s so much harder to forget the hurt that comes when your heart realizes that the noise you think it might be is not actually noise at all… and you really miss the song.

It would be so easy to stay

Warm within these four walls and those four corners (although the springs are literally caving beneath us now)…

It’s so much easier to lay down and just GIVE UP,

Give up the movie in your mind, reel by reel, of every nuisance and every mercy in your day.

But it’s quite impossible to give up every JOY these mercies (and even nuisances) become

When you simply quit running away

And stay.

What if we find ourselves beneath the snow,
Our warmest words all frozen in our throats
And all we feel is left out in the cold,
You and I?

What if the days grow short and lose their light?
What if the coals burn black and the embers die?
And we can’t find each other in the night?
You and I

Even the winter won’t last forever
We’ll see the morning, we’ll feel the sun
We’ll wake up in April, ready and able
Sowing the seeds in the soil
Of our love
Of our love

What if the ice we tread is just too thin?
What if we can’t escape the squall we’re in?
What if our hearts of stone are permanent?
You and I

Even the winter won’t last forever
We’ll see the morning, we’ll feel the sun
We’ll wake up in April, ready and able
Sowing the seeds in the soil
Of our love
Of our love

What if the spring comes soon
And we’re surprised?
What if the seasons help us realize,
Some things are only proven over time?
You know

Even the winter won’t last forever
We’ll see the morning, we’ll feel the sun
We’ll wake up in April, ready and able
Sowing the seeds in the soil
Of our love
Of our love

Even the winter won’t last forever
We’ll see the morning, we’ll feel the sun
We’ll wake up in April, ready and able
Sowing the seeds in the soil

Even the darkness cannot disarm us
We’ll see the morning, we’ll feel the sun
We’ll break up the earth, ’cause we know
That it’s worth it
Sowing the seeds in the soil
Of our love
Of our love
Of our love
Of our love

  1. Another song I hadn’t heard before, but LOVE! This song feels like spring and hope and promise. I mean I know the lyrics are all over that topic, but the melody is filled with it, too. It makes me believe that gray days and wet, dark weather will pass – soon- and we’ll feel the warmth of the sun on our skin and the hope that leaving out troubles behind brings. It reminds me, for a moment, of the all the little ones, their fingers curled around fat sticks of sidewalk chalk,, bent over their yellow, purple, pink, and green stick men, buildings, and giant flowers as they turn the dirty grey blacktop into a thing of wonder and beauty. Spring will come!
